A slice of kitchen theatre — lit, layered, and alive with detail.

This oil sketch captures the quiet intensity of a professional kitchen in full flow. Inspired by a moment at Blanchflower café in Altrincham, I wanted to freeze the scene behind the pass — where plated dishes wait, chefs focus hard, and everything is both choreographed and chaotic.

Plates stack high, salads are dressed, and the light above the pass turns each element into a miniature still life. Look closely and you’ll find pockets of impasto, smooth blends, and colour shifts that add warmth and weight to the everyday.

Painted from my own reference and finished in one sitting, this piece celebrates the light and atmosphere in the ritual of service and the hidden beauty of back-of-house.
