ABOUT

Amanda Mulquiney-Birbeck is a British figurative and urban landscape painter, based in Altrincham, Greater Manchester. Born in Berkshire in 1987, Amanda graduated with First Class Honours in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London, in 2009. Since then, her work has been exhibited widely in UK galleries and art fairs, most recently at the Manchester Buy Art Fair, and has attracted a dedicated following among collectors both in the UK and internationally. Her work has appeared in leading art publications such as Artists & Illustrators Magazine, as well as in homes featured by Reclaim Magazine and Elle Decor.

In 2026, Amanda will appear on Landscape Artist of the Year — airing on Sky Arts, Now TV and Freeview.

INSPIRATION

Amanda’s background in marketing and visual storytelling shapes her instinctive approach to composition and narrative. Drawing from her own photography, found imagery, and plein-air studies, she explores a space between realism and painterly abstraction. Her style is reminiscent of 20th century American Realism and graphic design influences.

At the heart of Amanda’s work is an interest in the beauty of everyday moments — the in-between scenes that might otherwise go unnoticed. Inspired by travel and urban life, her paintings move between exterior cityscapes and intimate interiors, using light, colour and composition to shape a strong sense of mood. There is often a quiet tension within the work: spaces feel lived-in yet still, figures present yet introspective.

Heavily influenced by the atmosphere of Edward Hopper, her work often depicts solitary urban landscapes where the figures are ‘together yet apart’ with a sense of introspective melancholy. These moments are reimagined through a brighter, more contemporary palette that brings a sense of warmth and familiarity.
